It gives me great
pleasure to write the foreword to Dayna’s book ‘I Read 320 Books at 9, So
Can You?’ If you were amazed by the title and the fact that a primary
six student could read that many books at such a young age, you are not
alone. I am as intrigued by her accomplishments as you are.
However, I think what
is more amazing about a nine-year old reading 320 books is that she
achieved the more incredible feat of writing a book herself, no less. In
fact, as I was reading through the first draft that was given to me, I was
impressed by her ability to express herself so well through words. I thought
I was young when I wrote my first book ‘I Am Gifted, So Are You!’ at the age
of 20, but this really breaks the record!
Dayna’s achievements
are a perfect example of the power of human potential and the fact that with
the right stimulation, we can develop the genius in any child. It is also a
testimony to the power of belief and that we should never let societal
beliefs stop us from attempting the seemingly impossible. When Dayna told
her parents that she wanted to write a book, they could have easily told her
that she was too young and that it was impossible. Instead, their constant
encouragement developed the belief inside of her that it was possible. And
as you can see from this book that you hold in your hands, the power of
belief can truly unleash the amazing power within a child.
Although many people
would like to believe that Dayna is just ‘special’ and born with the right
set of genes, I believe that 80% of a child’s genius is created by the right
environmental stimulation. Dayna’s love and passion for reading did not
happen by chance. It was her parents’ tremendous efforts in giving her the
best stimulation and exposure that made the difference. Since she was
two-years old, her mother would read to her multiple story-books every
night. They did not just tell her to read but by being avid readers
themselves, her parents taught her in the best way possible, by being great
role models.
In this book, Dayna’s
enthusiasm will ignite your interest, passion and excitement in the joy of
reading. Reading this book is like reading all 320 books that Dayna has
read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
